MADE TO ORDER 18th Century Ladies Jacket - variety of styles starting from £250
** Please note I am not taking new orders until 2025. Please contact me to enquire about availability after that. **
This listing is for a jacket made to order. It will be entirely handsewn in your selection from a range of:
* wools (in a variety of weights from tropical to Harris Tweed),
* linen,or
* printed cottons (such as Dutch chintz or block-printed Indian cotton),
using appropriate silk or linen threads. I use period correct construction techniques, too.
STYLES:
Options vary as to length and shapes of sleeves and skirts, bodice front pinned or laced over a stomacher. Fashions changed and evolved through the 18th century, so do let me know if you have a particular decade in mind. Or if you’re not sure what style was popular at a given time, I will be happy to point you to sources so you can see, and to advise you to the extent you wish.
GUIDE PRICES:
* A jacket with a bodice that closes at the centre front with pins costs £250.
* A jacket with a laced bodice costs £300. I can provide a matching stomacher for a laced-front jacket for an additional £50.
Costs do not include fabrics. Most jackets in most sizes require about 5 meters, including lining. Most of the fabrics I have in stock (wools, linens, block printed cottons) run about £15/meter. So you will want to budget £75-£100 on top of the costs to make the jacket. If you already own fabric you’d like me to use, do let me know and we can consider whether it’s suitable for your needs and for handsewn historical construction. If you wish me to provide fabrics, then once we have agreed on the fabrics, I will send you a further invoice to pay for those materials.
SIZING AND FIT:
Fitted 18th century jackets are designed to be worn over stays.
My pattern blocks are on a par with the sizing that is typical in commercial patterns. Let me know your bust and waist measurements and I will block up the appropriate size for you. This made-to-order (but not bespoke) approach will work just fine for figures of average proportions for your size, provided you are wearing well-fitting stays.
If you want a jacket made *BESPOKE* with a customised fit, please do get in touch and we can discuss your options. This is the best route for anyone with, for example, narrow shoulders + full bust, significantly short or long torso, broad shoulders, long arms, etc.
The photos show a few examples I have made recently.
