MADE TO ORDER 18th Century Bibbed Apron – Black Silk Taffeta, with or without ruffles

from £175.00

Every apron is 100% hand sewn as per the construction and style of the period: essentially, a panel of fabric approximately 55-60in/140-150 cm wide and 30inches/75cm long (34-36in/85-90cm for a dressier version), finely hemmed all round, with the width gathered to a narrow waistband with silk ribbon ties. The finished width of the apron at your waist should be approximately half of your waist circumferences (as measured over stays and petticoats) and 16-18in/40-46cm will suit most.

Prices start at £175 for an apron WITHOUT RUFFLES (appropriate for pretty much any part of the 18th century).

For the 1780s, you definitely want the ruffles – this adds a lot of time to the making — and the price goes up to £250 — but the result is rather spectacular.

The shaping of the “bib” can vary. The example in the photo is my personal apron made to a pattern drafted by American Duchess – but other shapes can be seen in artwork and in an extant featured in “Costume Close Up”. The bib is fastened to the bodice of your gown with pins, hence the name “pinner”.
