MADE TO ORDER Your Choice from a range of Classic 18th Century Caps starting from £100
Women wore a range of cap styles, with variations reflecting locations and cultural influences. In Anglo-American society, they most commonly fell into two types: those with lappets (of varying sizes/lengths) and those of the ‘dormeuse’ or ’round ear’ style. The former were ubiquitous in various forms (being especially fashionable in the 1740s), with the ’round ear’ cap becoming very popular with women of all ages and social rank in the 1770s and ever more elaborate versions developing in the last quarter or so, especially amongst the middle and upper classes.
My caps are 100% hand sewn using historically documented stitches and construction methods. Caps for everyday for all classes are made of linen, whilst ‘fancy caps’ for social wear by the upperclass may be made of a much finer fabric such as cotton voile, linen or silk gauze, and, depending on the period and place, may be highly decorated with ruffles, ribbons, bows, lace, etc.
Every cap has a large caul or crown, gathered or pleated to a band that lays over the top of the head, with or without a shaped ruffle towards the face, either gathered or pleated.
Prices for a basic three-piece cap like this, regardless of cut/style, start at £100. This price includes materials.
Adding trim such as silk ribbon and/or lace to portray a higher social rank requires a degree of customisation to achieve the the look you desire. Please let me know what you have in mind so I can give you a quote.
Bear in mind, all caps start with the same basic “pattern” pieces with variations in size and shape, each individually hemmed (whether with a very narrow flat/folded hem or with a fine hand rolled hem) before being assembled using variants of whip stitching. A basic cap constructed in this period correct manner goes together fairly quickly with time and vigilant practice. Good results reflect the fine sewing skills of a practiced historical milliner!
Lead time on caps made to order is currently approx. 8 weeks - to be confirmed at the time you place your order.
