(SOLD) 1770s English Gown in Silk Tartan - Excellent Used Condition (Worn Twice)

Sale Price:£450.00 Original Price:£1,250.00
sold out

This sale comes from my personal wardrobe.

I made this silk tartan gown in 2018 and wore it twice: to the Clan Mackenzie Society annual dinner & ceilidh in Perth in September 2018 and on a social costuming outing to Petworth House at Christmas 2018.

This listing includes gown and matching petticoat, only.

Pattern / style based on Larkin & Smith's "Fashionable Gown" - pleated back bodice completely separate from skirts. Pocket slits and internal ribbon ties to wear skirts retroussee. Gown skirts and petticoat both cut for wearing over bum pad (available separately from my Timesmith Dressmaking shop).

Size UK 16/18. I made this gown for myself and I'm rather "barrel shaped" in stays - more tubular than conical! Bust will fit up to 46 inches (which still allows overlap for pinning centre front). Please note my left shoulder sits very slightly higher than my right shoulder and the shoulder straps of this gown have been fitted to reflect this.

Please ask if you need more info or any specific measurement.

PLEASE NOTE THE GOWN IS MADE TO FIT OVER PERIOD UNDERGARMENTS INCLUDING BONED STAYS. IT WILL *NOT* FIT OVER MODERN UNDERWEAR OR OVER CORSETRY FROM A DIFFERENT TIME PERIOD.

As ever, this gown and petticoat have been completely 100% hand sewn with period stitching and construction techniques - please see photos. There are some tailoring marks on the interior bodice lining. One edge of the left shoulder strap lining is a raw edge - this is a common byproduct of fitting and is seen in period extants. The raw edge here is not going to ravel or fray much more, if at all, and shouldn't be a cause for concern or warrant any special care/treatment.

Care in the period was founded on the principle that the linen shift protected the gown from the body (skin cells, sweat, odors) and the gown would not have been laundered - simply brushed and aired as needed. In the modern world, your best friend is a vodka spray as and when for odour removal, and the occasional blast of steam to smooth out any wrinkles from storage.

Reluctant sale but hopefully it'll find a new home where it'll be worn more often.

FYI Price new would have been over £1,250 including the silk fabric (sourced from The Scotland Shop).
