(SOLD) 18th Century “‘Housewife” Sewing Kit – silk brocade
This is a traditional 18th century style housewife or ‘hussif’, a small sewing kit suitable for taking with you anywhere and everywhere.
This particular example is made from remnants of fabrics from 18th century sewing projects from the past two years, with the cover being a blue and gold silk brocade and the interior pockets being silk taffetas and linens with a one wool felt pocket and a wool felt needle leaf. The remnants were not all the same size and shape so the various pockets are not uniform in size and proportion, yet care has been taken to ensure that everything is useful and of suitable size for typical sewing kit contents, especially when the housewife has been fully packed and is then rolled up.
Special offer: add £10 to get all the sewing notions you see in the photos: a set of 4 needles (sizes 5-11), traditional embroidery scissors, two wooden thread winders, a bar of beeswax and a classic metal thimble. (Please note the scissors and thimble are not period correct for the 18th century, but they’re vintage-y and lovely. )
